Check out a list of helplines and websites offering support and answers to your questions about teen dating and breakup violence. National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline : Love is Respect i s a joint project between the National Dating Abuse Helpline and Break the Cycle to provide resources for teens, parents, friends and family, peer advocates, government officials, law enforcement officials and the general public. All communication is confidential and anonymous.
We also provide information about dating abuse to service providers, counselors, teachers and members of law enforcement. Peer advocates can connect you to resources in your area, provide you with helpful websites, help you create a plan to stay safe or just listen to your concerns. All conversations with peer advocates via phone, chat or text are free and confidential.
You will never be asked for your name or other contact information, but an advocate may ask for your age and city to find local resources for you. You do NOT have to download anything to use it. The live chat IM-style is not a public chat room. That minimizes the chance of issues like messages disappearing or the conversation ending abruptly. If your situation is extremely complex or you are having technical difficulties, consider contacting us by phone. Chats move more quickly when both you and the advocate can focus and respond promptly.
But try not to chat when you need to be doing something else or will have to step away from the computer. We are a crisis line, so be aware that our chats timeout if they are inactive for too long. You know your situation best, so the more you can tell us about your needs, the better.

Dating abuse is when one partner tries to exert power or control over his or her dating partner. It can be a pattern of abusive behaviors that develop over time. Unfortunately, violence in dating relationships is not uncommon: statistics show that 1 in 3 teenagers has experienced dating violence. Dating violence can affect anyone. Although most victims are women, who are also at greater risk for serious injury, it affects men as well. Every relationship is different, and sometimes it can be hard to tell when it has crossed the line from healthy to unhealthy.
But, there are warning signs of abuse.

The teenage years are a time of rapid changes in physical, emotional and social growth. Our children are often not prepared for these changes, especially when it comes to dating. Research shows that teens who become victims of dating violence are more likely to be victimized later in life, are more likely to participate in risky behaviors such as drug, alcohol, and tobacco use, and have higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.
The important thing to understand is that dating violence and abuse can occur in all of these situations. Teen dating violence is commonly defined as a pattern of abuse or threat of abuse against a teenaged dating partner.

Section Teen Dating Violence is a pattern of emotional, verbal, sexual, or physical abuse used by one person in a current or past dating relationship to exert power and control over another when one or both of the partners is a teenager. The abusive partner uses this pattern of violent and coercive behavior to gain power and maintain control over the dating partner. This may also include abuse, harassment, and stalking via electronic devices such as cell phones and computers, and harassment through a third party, and may be physical, mental, or both.
