Boy meets girl. Boy likes girl. Boy and girl become best friends who date each other as a social experiment. This is not your typical love story, but it is the one of Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh. The two something graphic designers living in New York created the blog, 40 Days of Dating. Throughout their friendship, Goodman and Walsh bonded over their relationship problems. As explained on their blog Walsh is a self-proclaimed hopeless romantic, who falls into serious relationships too quickly. Goodman likes to play the field, preferring to casually date many women. This sparked the idea for their social experiment to see if the dating myth is true: Can two people with opposite dating styles make it work as a couple? They then created a blog after the experiment and published their journal entries side by side for all 40 days, illustrated in a unique way with graphic design.

Over in New York, two close friends had decided to stage an experiment, dating for 40 consecutive days, and writing about the experience. Eighteen months later, and the pair are back, with a book about their experiment, and the aftermath. Now, I have to admit, two summers ago, I tried to get into 40 Days. I remember reading the first couple of days of the experiment, but struggling to get into it. I attributed it to dating overkill.
I was knee-deep in my own dating experiment. And so, when I saw the hype surrounding the new book, I decided to give the project another go. However, this time I was able to pinpoint some of the reasons why 40 Dates of Dating is lost on me. Even in the opening pages, I found myself quickly disliking Jessie and her take on life.
This only amplified as she continues on through the book, becoming more and more preachy about her lifestyle and everything-free hipster eating habits. I have friends from all backgrounds, and with all kinds of attitudes to life, and yet I found it hard to relate to Jessie in any way. By contrast, Timothy seemed more likeable, though he still became rather frustrating as the pages went on, mainly as a result of his increasing obsession with Jessie.
In the end, I skim-read much of the second half, basically trying to find a the days where they had sex, and b whether they ended up going out in the end. Yes, I of all people know challenges are always contrived, but this went a step further than most.

Did anything interesting happen? Truthfully, I am quite nervous. However, I know that when an opportunity scares me, I must go for it. No matter what the outcome, it will certainly be an interesting experience. Hopefully we can have some fun along the way, too.
The ground rules were simple: see each other every day for 40 days, go on at least 3 dates a week, see a couple’s therapist, and don’t hook up.
So you may or may not have heard of the 40 Days of Dating project. Spend time with your project every day anywhere from minutes. In lieu of seeing a couples therapist, choose a book or some sort of tutorial to improve your craft or help you do your best work. Spend at least one hour a week on this. In Dear Diary fashion, create and take a daily questionnaire or write in a journal.
You can include whatever questions you think would be beneficial. Go on a weekend trip choose a weekend to get away and spend all your time with your project. No cheating no spending time on other things, including other projects. As you may know, when it comes to my creative projects, I suffer from Shiny Wrapper Syndrome.
